| PARTNERS IN GLOBAL ALLIANCE : INTERNATIONAL INSTITUTIONS |
|
International institutions have a vital role to play in the global alliance against forced labour, lending their weight and influence to the efforts of national partners. The International Labour Organisation is the specialised agency of the United Nations with the mandate to promote respect for all labour rights, including the abolition of forced labour and of child labour. It has the responsibility to set and supervise international labour standards, and to assist countries to put them into practice. Other UN programmes and agencies have important roles to play too, including UNICEF and UNDP . The UN has a wide range of legal instruments that address slavery and slavery-like practices. Under its Sub-Commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights, the Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery provides a unique platform for NGOs and victims of slavery to have their voices heard.
The World Bank , including its private sector lending arm, the International Finance Corporation , as well as the regional development banks, can promote respect for labour rights in many ways through their lending policies and programmes. Poverty Reduction Strategies can provide the ideal vehicle to highlight bonded and other forced labour issues, and ensure that priority is given to the most vulnerable groups in national investment programmes.
