| COMMUNITY BASED ACTION : GENDER EQUALITY |
|
Gender inequality is a major obstacle to tackling poverty in South Asia. By preventing women and girls, more than half the total population, from realising their full potential, it hampers not only their own development but also that of the whole society and economy. Similarly, but less widely recognized, men and boys are constrained by their gender to particular roles and behaviours, meaning that they, too, may not be contributing their utmost to local and national development.
Pursuing gender equality must be part of all action to tackle bonded labour, ensuring that the respective situations of men and women, boys and girls are fully understood and properly addressed. In community-based work, it is particularly important to empower women and girls, meeting both their practical and strategic gender needs, while seeking also to garner the support of men.
In the face of deep-rooted discrimination against women, such efforts are bound to be challenging. However, many materials and tools are now available to assist in the achievement of gender equality, a selection of which is accessible here
